Inside, somebody is talking about Gazza, Shearer, Scotland, Germany or whether England can actually win the thing.

The summer of 1996 has begun.

June 1996 feels close enough to touch.

And yet impossibly far away.

It was a football tournament played before smartphones, social media and constant connection. A tournament experienced through newspaper back pages, Ceefax screens, pub televisions and summer evenings spent waiting for kick-off.

For many people, Euro 96 was more than a football competition.

It became part of the memory of a particular Britain.

The music.

The weather.

The optimism.

The feeling that something was changing.

Over the next thirty days, Euro 96 Revisited will return to that world.

Not simply to revisit the matches.

Not simply to relive famous goals.

But to understand why Euro 96 still feels unfinished in the minds of so many people.
